چکیده

In 1996, a new variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD)-a disease that causes lack of coordination, muscle twitching or jerking, dementia, and, eventually, death-suddenly appeared in Great Britain. It is believed that the victims contracted the disease from eating the beef of cattle stricken with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), or mad cow disease. As of December 1997, at least 25 people in the United Kingdom and France have contracted vCJD.

Lameness in dairy cows: the developing story.

MY professional career has spanned five decades. In that time I have experienced some major animal health disasters involving cattle. Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), foot-and-mouth disease and bovine tuberculosis (TB) have threatened the industry that I serve, and cost millions of pounds. But lameness has inflicted more pain and suffering on more cows during those decades than any, or a...

[Bovine spongiform encephalopathy and food safety].

The governments of Great Britain and France disagree on the safety of British beef with respect to bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). Eventually the consumer might have the burden to decide whether beef from Britain is safe to eat with regard to the new variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD). Outside Britain the incidence of BSE increases. Probably in continental Europe, the use of hi...

Bov-tA short interspersed nucleotide element sequences in circulating nucleic acids from sera of cattle with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) and sera of cattle exposed to BSE.

Circulating nucleic acids (CNA) are known to be enriched in repetitive DNA sequences in humans. Here, bovine sera CNA were analyzed to determine if cell stress-related short interspersed nucleotide elements (SINEs) could be detected in sera from cattle associated with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). Nucleic acids were extracted, amplified, cloned, and sequenced from the sera of protease...

Decontamination of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and other transmissible agents.

The bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) epidemic in cows, and the recent BSE-linked human infections, present new public health problems. More rigorous measures are needed to prevent additional transmissions. Tissue from established but undiagnosed human infections can contaminate medical supplies and instruments. We tested guanidine thiocyanate (GdnSCN) solutions and found them to be highly...

Epidemiological Analysis of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (bse)

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in cattle, scrapie in sheep and goats, chronic wasting disease (CWD) in cervids, and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in humans are known as prion diseases or transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE), which cause neurodegenerative disorders. BSE was first reported in the United Kingdom (UK) in 1987, following which over 180,000 cases have been report...
